Dead by the Pool

(R; Action/Psychological Drama/Sexual Content) Our vengeful nerd fights to the death against a corporate enemy. He dies, then parties in a lustful Purgatory. Surrounded by posers, bouncers and bondage models, will he return to the living? Read the story overview for more behind-the-scenes details.

This is another recreation of a rejected ’80s story. Even in this current draft, there’s still a lot of David Lynch, Frank Miller and Howard Chaykin influence. The office is based on where I worked at the time, right down to the family photos on the desk. My model for the secretary was the Taxi-era Marilu Henner.

Dark Spot on the Couch

Ha! It’s funny, but of course the office is based on somewhere specific. I was thinking “that background is weirdly generic for Dave!” Because it’s based on a real, probably really bland office.

One color note: the dark spot color on the couch reads as all-black (on my screen) and creates a dead spot that dominates the bottom panel and most of the lower quarter of the page.

You’re right about that couch — yikes! The entire story’s color (done about 10 years ago) is way too saturated and ill-conceived. I hadn’t yet wanted to color like Jean Giraud. I’d love to recolor with what I know now, but would rather apply those lessons to new work. Thanks for chiming in!
