My lettering’s a mashup of Artie Simek (dialog letter forms) and Bill Yoshida (brush word balloons, placement, title and logo). I gave Veronika a Bettie Page cut on a whim, then got rid of Betsy’s bangs.

Panel 2 is an example of referencing Dan DeCarlo’s style without stealing it. I didn’t use his famous eyes, but did tried using his graceful brush strokes, simplified world and body language.

Betsy’s inner fantasy in Panel 3 was a high school yearbook shot in the first draft. In development, connecting yoga to the target of her affection told a more accurate story. Referencing sexual yogo postions with Goole Image was easy; finding one that was accurate and showed both character faces wasn’t.
